She is known for her original contributions of major significance to the field of patient advocacy that include advocating for and participating in the American Academy of Neurology’s Work Group to develop the first-ever Distal Symmetric Polyneuropathy Performance Measurement Set; raising the public profile and advocacy for neuropathy; creating the “Talk Neuropathy” campaign to engage people in the public eye to shed light on a little-known disease affecting 20 million people in the U.S.; launching Facebook Chat events to connect a global network of neuropathy patients, health experts, and scientists in a way they would not have otherwise been able to in their local communities; and developing surveys to engage with neuropathy patients and provide the “lived experience” at scientific meetings. She has made critical contributions to prestigious organizations including, The Neuropathy Association, Children’s Cancer & Blood Foundation, Dysautonomia International, and, more recently, the Adult Polyglucosan Body Disease (APBD) Research Foundation.
By virtue of her accomplishments, Ms. Pires has risen to the very top of her field of endeavor. She possesses a level of expertise that personifies that she is one of the small percentage of experts in this critical area of patient advocacy. Now, in her position at the APBD Research Foundation, her patient advocacy and research engagement efforts are changing the way we tackle the challenges the APBD and the broader rare disease communities face. She has over two decades of experience in cultivating relationships, facilitating collaborations, developing strategic plans, building and restructuring programs, and bringing patients and other stakeholders to the table to drive meaningful patient advocacy and engagement.
