Legislative Update

On August 21, President Obama and DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano met with immigration advocates, faith leaders, labor, business and law enforcement officials at the White House to discuss moving forward with a comprehensive immigration reform bill this year.  While the President commended Sens.Charles Schumer’s (D-NY) and Harry Reid’s (D-NV) efforts to move a bill forward, he also urged participants to work together in a bipartisan effort to advance a sensible and humane immigration system that is consistent with American values.

Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Chairman of the Immigration, Refugee and Border Security Subcommittee, has tapped Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to help garner GOP support for a comprehensive immigration bill this year.  All of these factors lead us to hope for comprehensive immigration reform in the near future to fix our broken immigration system, create a reasonable path for legalization and improve our immigration system to provide for the expeditious granting of permanent residence and temporary visas for family based and employment based immigrants.
