On October 21, 2013, USCIS issued a new policy memorandum (effective immediately) clarifying the 17-month extension of OPT (practical training) for
graduates with a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM).
In order to apply for the 17-month extension of OPT, a student must still be in a valid period of OPT for that particular STEM degree and must have completed all requirements of that degree, except for a thesis requirement.
