Managing Partner Michael Wildes is guest author at East Meadow Public Library, where he focused on the importance of immigration and discussed his new book Safe Haven in America: Battles to Open the Golden Door, which draws on over a quarter of a century of Michael’s practice in the immigration field, November 29, 2018.
On November 29, 2018 Michael Wildes held an author Q & A at the East Meadow Public Library, East Meadow, NY to discuss the importance of immigration and his new book, Safe Haven in America: Battles to Open the Golden Door.
Whether it’s the long-term impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on immigration policy or the latest twist in separating children from migrants seeking asylum, Michael Wildes’ opinion has been sought by a range of news organizations, from Fox News to CNN. He speaks with the hard-won experience of nearly a quarter-century on the front lines of the immigration controversy, as an attorney and as managing partner of the premier immigration law practice in the country. His views have not always been popular – at times he’s had to back up his lawyer’s suit with a bulletproof vest – but they’re never dull.
With the publication of Safe Haven in America: Battles to Open the Golden Door, Wildes doesn’t travel over well-worn legal and political terrain. He presents case histories that read more like espionage thrillers, populated with KGB agents, nuclear whistle-blowers, and even accused terrorists fighting for their lives as well as legal standing in the U.S. But he also tells human stories – tales of children kidnapped to foreign countries in bitter divorce battles; families all but destroyed by the attack on the World Trade Center; a hero’s shabby treatment after standing up to terror; and a young DACA recipient becoming the target of a hate attack.
From managing media expectations with bombshell political revelations to the day-to-day demands of running a practice with office in four states, Wildes presents a look behind the scenes of one of America’s perennial political flash-points, along with startling disclosures from some of his most riveting cases.
Wildes & Weinberg is a boutique law firm specializing exclusively in the practice of U.S. immigration and nationality law and was founded in 1960 by Senior Partner Leon Wildes, whose best-known accomplishment was his successful representation of John Lennon in his widely publicized deportation proceedings, the circumstances of which have inspired several films, books, and documentaries.
Today the firm, which has offices in New York City, Englewood, NJ, Miami, FL, and by appointment in Los Angeles, CA, services a distinguished domestic and international clientele and covers all areas of U.S. immigration law, including employment and investment-based immigration, work permits, permanent residence for qualified individuals, family-based immigration, asylum applications and all temporary and permanent type visas.
In addition to running a highly successful immigration law practice, Michael is also of counsel to Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and two international/corporate law firms. A former Federal Prosecutor with the United States Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn (1989-1993), Michael has testified on Capitol Hill in connection with anti-terrorism legislation, and is a frequent participant on professional panels and commentator on network television and radio with regard to US immigration law, employer sanction work and compliance.
Michael also served two terms as the Mayor of Englewood, New Jersey (and recently was reelected in a landslide victory to resume the role of Mayor in January, 2019), was appointed to the District Appeals Board of the Selective Service System for the State of New Jersey, was a member of the New Jersey Governor’s Blue Panel on Immigration, and has been a guest lecturer at many distinguished forums and institutions including Yale University, New York University, Brooklyn Law School, and The Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where Michael is an Adjunct Professor of Business Immigration Law.
Despite difficulties currently being encountered in dealing with U.S. immigration authorities, Wildes & Weinberg has maintained an extraordinary track record for success for its cases. Moreover, the firm’s multilingual staff is known for its experience and special expertise in processing each foreign national’s case with nothing less than the highest level of professionalism.
