Harvard’s Ability to Enroll International Students Revoked

On May 22, 2025, the Trump administration revoked Harvard University’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), effectively stripping the university of its ability to enroll international students.

This move could significantly impact a large segment of Harvard’s population. The university reports having over 9,000 individuals in its international academic community, with international students accounting for more than 25% of its total enrollment during the 2024–2025 academic year. According to the Department of Homeland Security, this move comes after Harvard refused to provide information they had previously demanded about some foreign student visa holders who attend the university. Harvard contends, however, that the revocation was both illegal and retaliatory.

Regardless, this disruption could be problematic for many, and Harvard is expected to seek a Temporary Restraining Order to keep the status quo while they fight this out in Court. In the meantime, it is critical for affected individuals to consult with immigration attorneys to review their options for remaining in the U.S., should the revocation remain in effect.
