On June 7, 2022, Cameroon was first designated for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months, due to an ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary, temporary conditions that made it unsafe for Cameroonian nationals presently in the United States to return. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later extended and re-designated TPS for Cameroonians for another 18-month period, from December 8, 2023, through June 7, 2025, citing the persistence of these conditions.
However, DHS has since determined that although some of the circumstances that prompted the original TPS designation may still exist, they no longer present a serious threat to individual safety or prevent Cameroonians from returning home safely. As such, DHS recently issued a notice of termination, resulting in the termination of TPS for Cameroon nationals as of August 4, 2025, which will be 60 days after the publication date of the notice.
This termination is currently being challenged in court. This blog was last updated on June 5, 2025.
