On February 23, 2017, the Community Affairs Bureau of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) issued a statement confirming the NYPD’s dual commitment to maintaining public safety for all residents and a welcoming environment for immigrant communities. To this end, the NYPD confirmed the following:
- The NYPD does not conduct civil enforcement. This means that the NYPD will not enforce warrants issued solely in connection with civil immigration violations from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or federal immigration judges.
- The NYPD does not inquire about the immigration status of crime victims, witnesses or others who call or approach the police seeking assistance.
- The NYPD accepts the IDNYC photo identification card issued by the City of New York as a valid and recognized form of government issued ID.
